Last week we attended the Healthcare Design Awards, where two Inspire Neurocare services were shortlisted. While we didn’t come away with the award, we are proud to see the work recognised alongside some outstanding projects across the sector.
At Inspire Neurocare, the therapeutic environment is part of care. Many people arrive with us after long hospital stays, often at a point where clinical surroundings have shaped daily life for months. The role of our centres is to help that feeling change by creating places that feel familiar, calm and safe from the moment someone walks through the door.
A lot of attention goes into details that are easy to overlook but matter enormously to residents.
The layout supports rehabilitation and wellbeing as much as therapy rooms do. Kitchens allow people to relearn everyday skills. Accessible gardens give a reason to go outside. Spaces are positioned so independence can be practiced safely, without residents feeling observed or restricted. The aim is always dignity first.
Comfort also matters. Lighting, acoustics and colour are chosen to reduce confusion and overstimulation, particularly for people living with neurological conditions or cognitive change. The environment should do some of the work for staff, helping people orientate themselves and feel settled before support is even provided.
We know that environment and good quality care directly affects recovery, confidence and wellbeing. Families often tell us they notice the difference immediately, and staff feel it too; when a place works well, relationships happen more naturally.
Congratulations to the winners and everyone shortlisted. It was a valuable opportunity to spend time with others who care deeply about how healthcare spaces feel, not just how they function. For our team, the evening was simply a chance to reflect on why we build our services the way we do — to make everyday life possible again.
